Kanyakumari is a popular pilgrimage centre of the Hindus. It is dedicated to the goddess Kanyakumari - Youthful Virgin, who is an incarnation of Devi,- Sivas wife. Legends say that the Virgin Goddess, did penance to obtain the hand of Lord Siva. When she was unsuccessful in her attempt, she vowed to remain a virgin (Kanya). Hence the name Kanyakumari.

Kanniyakumari is famous for its spectacular sunrises and sunsets, especially on full moon days, The beach itself is a beautiful sight with lmuklti-colouted sand. There is a lightoused form where one can get a panoramic view. The Government museum offers a good collection of sculptural art crafts of Tamil Nadu. At the southernmost tip of India, where the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal meet, liles Kanniyakumari, an important pilgrim centre.

Places to See :

Vivekananda Rock Memorial : On the sea side, is built a large, beautiful memorial, dedicated to Swami Vivekanand. Here Swami Vivekanand did his meditation. The memorial was built in 1970. It houses a huge metal statue of Vivekananda. To reach this memorial one has to take the ferry services or boats plying between the rock memorial and the mainland. The merger of three seas- Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean can be seen from these rocks. While looking at the horizon, one gets a feeling, that nature has sprayed various colors on water. Though the structure is well constructed, it has been very badly maintained.

Gandhi Memorial : Built in memory of Gandhi ji, the memorial is a good example of modern architecture. Here, the last remains are kept for public viewing. The pot containing the remains of Gandhiji, is placed in such manner that the first sunlight falls on it.

Alvar Tirunagari : Alvar Tirunagari is one of the celebrated Vaishnav temples of Kannyakumari, Alvar Tirunagari temple is one of the nine sung of by the saint Namalvar. It is said that the saint attained enlightenment under a tree enshrined here. Alvar Tirunagari is dedicated to Lord Adinatha.
